Here are the lyrics to my R&B song "I Got More Back Than You Baby". I submitted this for the American Idol songwriting contest and sadly it did not place in the Top 20..
Please let me know what you think.
I see you lookin’ at me from behind
Girl, I know what is on yo mind
You be jealous of all that junk in my trunk
You think it will help you win my hunk
Oh sista,I’m here to say
I got more back than you bay-bay
Oh, Oh, Oh
I think you should go….
No, No, No
I am really sho
You can do anything, go anywhere, but you just a wanna be with that polyester hair
Chorus:
Nothin’ you can do,Nothin’ you can say
I got more back than you bay-bay
Yeah
First he’ll check you out, then he’ll turn to me and say
You got more back than that ho bay-bay
I think it’s time you discover
I got an ass like no other
You can laugh at me all day long
But you don’t hold a candle to me in that thong
Oh sista, I’m here to say
I got more back than you bay-bay
What, What what?
Who gives a flip?
Like My Milkshake?
Do you want a sip?
You can fit in that dress, To size 1 you cling, but at least I got back and at least I can sing
Chorus
Bridge:
Oh sista, I’m here to say, I got more back than you bay-bayThat’s right… I’ll never be wrong
As long as I got back my man loves me in that thong
You just don’t get it do ya? What I gotta do to prove ya?
You don’t understand, well you must not know my man.
My Man. Yeah. My maaaan
Ooooh, Ooooh
End of Bridge
First he’ll check you out, then he’ll turn to me and say
You got more back than that ho bay-bay

Here's my recap: (and for those of you complaining about Jordin going last, she went first last week)
Melinda Doolittle
“Love You Inside”- Good vocals, but her version was just like LaToya London's version- BORING. Did not make me jump out of my chair. Randy, Paula and Simon felt like it didn't wow them in anyway and told her she can do better. “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” - Finally Melinda picks a song that I've actually heard of before (other than Heaven Knows). After what, eight weeks. The first half of the song was alright, but the second part was great. Randy felt it was better, Paula sitll wants to be wowed and Simon told her it booked her a ticket to the semifinals.
Blake Lewis
“You Should Be Dancing” - Beat-box style- Sang basically the whole thing in either beat box or falsetto. Not very good. Really pitchy and the beat boxing did not work out. Randy felt it didn't work out for him. Paula liked the beat boxing but not the singing and Simon thought it was horrible. Personally I thought it was excruciating. I liked Blake best when he sang "Somewhere Only We Know" in Week 1 and wish he would sing more songs like that.
“This is Where I Came In” - There was a reason this song was not a hit for the BG's. He added more beat boxing in this one too. Randy did not like it and told him he does not always have to beat box. Paula loved him. Simon said he was vulnerable. Unfortunately, the three divas will probably split votes leaving Blake safe.
Lakisha Jones
“Stayin’ Alive” - LaKisha slowed this down a bit and did not go up as high. She got back to her shouting in parts, but overall I thought she did a good job of making it her own and didn't think it was that bad. However, the judges hated it. Simon did not want to kiss her anymore. I don't get how some can change up songs and some can't. Definitely not as bad as the judges made it out.
“Run to Me” - Wasn't great, but wasn't bad. Some parts of it were pretty good. Randy said it was better than the first song and Paula loved it. Simon basically ensured that she would leave by telling her she had a bad night and that she was as vulnerable as Blake. The two best Bon Jovi performers were the two worst tonight.
Jordin Sparks
“To Love Somebody” - Best performance of the night. When asked to compare it with Clay Aiken's verison- you can't. They are different. She made it a Mariah Careyish performance and did a nice job with it. Clay's was also great. Barry said that it was probably the best version he had heard of it. The three judges loved it.
“Woman in Love”- Jordin could have wrapped this competition up with a solid performance in her second song. Unfortunately, she made an awful song choice and Simon called it pagaenty. It seemed like she was whining the whole song. Randy didn't like it that much and Paula loves it anyway. Even though I thought this was a horrible theme for the Top 4, Jordin could have picked a better song than this. However, if she sang "My Everything" she would have gotten compared to Kimberly Locke.
Rant
I wish they would make the themes more general like "Disco" or 80's music rather than restricting songs to the BG's or Bon Jovi. After all, they didn't make country the Martina McBride song book week.
So in conclusion the best performer of the night- Jordin in "To Love Somebody" with Melinda as runner up in "Mend a Broken Heart"
Predictions for Bottom 2: Jordin and LaKisha
Going home: La Kisha
Should be going home: Blake

All Black American Idol Top 12
Here is my Top 12 for my All-Black American Idol.
These contestants are chosen from all seasons. Please comment on whether you agree with these or have any additions or subtractions. I am counting people who are half black into this ranking to. Thanks for your help. After the Final Top 12 is solidified, it is up to your votes too determine who wins the Black American Idol Crown! Voting will start after any additions/subtractions are made to this list:
1. Ruben Studdard- he did not have much success in selling records and he personally was not my favorite, but he was a winner so he has to make this list
2. Fantasia Barrino- once again, not as succesful as AI would have hoped at selling records, but an unbelievable performer.
3. Tamyra Gray
4. Melinda Doolittle
5. La Kisha Jones
6. Jordin Sparks
7. Kimberley Locke
8. Vonzell Solomon
9. George Huff
10. Paris Bennet

American Idol Eliminations: Phil and Chris

A lot of people are upset that Phil got eliminated and LaKisha got to stay. Many also feel that Phil is a better performer than Kiki and that he got robbed in favor of her.
Whether one singer is better than another is all a matter of preference. However, with all this outcry over Phil leaving and LaKisha staying, you can't help but see that racism is involved.
1. Assumption #1- Phil is better than LaKisha
As I mentioned earlier, this is a preference. However, it is a preference that is shaped by race. White people see Phil as an American hero, a patriot and a Christian. A good family man who is self sacrificing. While he had a few strong weeks the last two weeks of the competition up until that he was horrible. On the other hand, they see LaKisha as a baby momma ho, a copycat of all other divas, ghetto and a J-Hud wanna be.
The fact is, white people are comfortable around white people. That's who they grew up around. That's why Phil stayed in the competition for so long- It was because the red state, conservative voters kept him in. He was their candidate and they wanted him to go until the end. The red state conservative voters got Bush elected and got Carrie Underwood the American Idol trophy and were dissapointed that their magic finally did not work on getting Phil the American Idol crown.
2. Assumption # 2- LaKisha, Melinda and Jordin have the same fan base: Once again, this is a racist assumption because it is basically saying "They are all black (or at least half black), so their fanbase is all black people". Of course people can't fathom how all three are staying when obviously their vote is getting split among black people. There's not enough of us in the country for us to keep three contestants in the competition at once. The truth is, they obviously are not splitting votes. Jordin in my opinion, with her ability to sing country and pop, and the fact that she is half white allows her to get a wide variety of votes. Melinda is also a candidate who gets a wide variety of votes and has a huge fanbase of all races. LaKisha, is the one who probably relies on the black vote the most. Yet, all three are different and have different fanbases. Yet, people see them as the same person. They see them as all "divas" because they are all at least half black. Just because someone is black does not mean they are like all other black singers. Fantasia is different than J-Hud who is different than Beyonce who is different than Whitney who is different than Tina Turner.
#3 Predictions: Now that I've gotten all of that off my chest, here are my predictions:
The final 2 will be Blake and either Jordin or Melinda. I am not sure which one it will be yet.
Phil will get a country record deal
Melinda, Jordin, Kiki all three will get record deals regardless of whether they win or not. I think Jordin will do the best as far as sales is concerned, but with some marketing Kiki or Melinda can do well also.
I hate to bring up race in this competition, but racism affects all factors of our life whether we believe it or not. As I've said earlier, if Phil were black he would not make it past the round of 32. As you saw, Jared Cotter had a great voice and didn't make it and Brandon Rogers also got eliminated at #12. All two of these guys got better feedback from the judges than Phil in the original rounds. After Phil's disastorous "I need You" performance, the only thing saving him was his white booty.

Intro Blog
Hey Everybody,
I am Mosheeaka Ellison and I'm a junior double majoring in African American Studies and Communications. This is my blog on American Idol and whatever else I want to write about. I hope you enjoy!
I write a column each week for the school paper and write features on events regarding the African American Community. I also come on once a week on the school radio station.
I know you will not always agree with me on what I have to say and I encourage outspokeness and honesty. I love people of all races, and believe people of all races have certain stereotypes that they use in basing their judgements and making choices in life. I just believe in pointing out and addressing these stereotypes.
Thanks,
M
